The thirteenth installment in the Super Sentai series was called Kousoku Sentai Turboranger or simply Turboranger. The series aired from March of 1989 until February of 1990 and ran for 51 episodes. Turboranger’s plot heavily involved magic and science mixing together. The story begins with a war between the alliance of humans and fairies taking on the Boma Hundred Tribes or simple the Boma Tribe. It was a war that raged on for years which then finally concluded with the victory of the humans and fairies. The Boma Tribe were then sealed restoring temporary peace. Twenty thousand years later, as humans would slowly deteriorate the land the seal would be weakened.
The Boma Tribe now escapes and runs amuck with the threat of taking over the world. There are only a few fairies left who now aid Dr. Shiron in saving the world. They summon five high school students to aid them in their cause. The students are then bestowed magical powers with the aspects of science making them powered suits for the battles ahead. The team is now dubbed as the Turboranger and they aim to fight to make the world a better place from the threat of the Boma Tribe. The flow of each episode is pretty much standard to the past Super Sentai series.
The bad guys come up with an evil plan for the day and then set conflict. The good guys try to find a way to resolve the issue with several road blocks. Then there are the usual instances of fighting the monster of the day which culminates to the giant monster versus mecha battle. The battle is won, issue is resolved and that makes up the day. One of the many things changed in this series is that it has a mixture of magic in it giving the members their powers. This is a bit opposed to previous series where they derived their powers solely or at least mainly through science and technology. It’s also the first series to have an entire team composed of high school students rather than trained and seasoned professionals.
We’ll now take a look at the members of the Turboranger as well as other characters in the series.
Riki is the team captain of his school’s baseball team. He is good at what he does but he doesn’t perform well in academics making his teacher doubt his seriousness in school. Despite his short comings in academics, he is passionate about his dream. His dream is to become a professional baseball player when he graduates. He fits the leader role just fine being a captain of team and all. His weapon is the GT Sword and attacks with the GT Crash.
We’ll continue to more characters from the Turboranger series next time.
