Japan has some of the best delicacies in the world like their sushi, ramen and kobe beef dishes. Then again like other countries, Japan also has its weird foods. Just because they’re weird doesn’t mean that they don’t taste good or aren’t healthy. They just come off as something that one wouldn’t normally or even dare to eat. It’s just a matter of taste but like other countries, Japan has its list of weird foods. This is why we’re going to take a look at some of the weirdest foods coming from Japan. These foods may be something that you have heard of or some that have escaped your vision.
Insect Sushi
Sushi is a staple from Japan which uses sticky rice and raw seafood. Insect sushi is a twist because instead of using seafood, it uses insects of different kind. Don’t be alarmed though as these insects are edible, healthy and safe to consume. It’s probably the taste factor that comes into play and if one would be willing enough to eat them. The good thing is that unlike standard sushi which is raw the insects are dead and slightly cooked so that they won’t be too icky to eat. Then again there are those that prefer them alive and kicking but would you have them moving around?
Soy Sauce Ice Cream
Japanese people love their flavors and soy sauce is a condiment that is present in almost every household. Its salty taste adds a flavor to any dish served making it a bountiful. If we were to put that same soy sauce into an ice cream mix and turn it into one would it still come off as something delicious? Apparently it does because soy sauce ice cream is one of the most loved desserts from Japan. The taste would be a mix of sweetness and saltiness. The soy sauce aroma and smell would definitely reek out but the flavor would be an interesting mix of the two ingredients but don’t worry because you won’t be tasting soy sauce entirely.
Natto
Natto is a classic Japanese food that is loved by a lot but also avoided by many. Natto is made up of fermented soy beans giving it a salty yet satisfying flavor. When you look at it without any knowledge, you would think that it is sweet because it looks like caramelized beans sticking to each other. Natto may taste good but the thing that turns people off is its smell. It smells so bad that some people compare it to a smelly sock. It’s so pungent that it can turn off anyone who hasn’t eaten it. Setting aside its foul odor, the natto is truly a treat at least in the taste department.
We’ll continue to more weird Japanese foods next time.
